Abbey Pet Hospital has proudly served El Cerrito, CA since 1958. Our veterinary clinic is owned and operated by veterinarian Dr. Matt Judd.

Dr. Matthew Judd

Dr. Matthew Judd joined Abbey Pet Hospital in early 2011, and became the business owner in early 2016 after Dr. Lee Prutton retired.  A native Californian having been born and raised in the Central Valley. After graduating from Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007, Dr. Judd began his veterinary career by working in Placerville, CA. where he treated dogs, cats, horses, llamas, sheep, goats, pigs and the occasional cow. After a few years of mixed animal practice, he moved to the Bay Area to focus on dogs and cats. On his days off Dr. Judd enjoys spending time with his family, running and exploring the Bay Area.

Dr. Joy Hollenback

Dr. Hollenback graduated from UC Davis in 2007. She has been working in the East Bay since 2008. She has an interest in surgery, diagnostics, and rabbit medicine. In her free time she enjoys being outdoors and swimming in the sea.

Dr. Gretel Schlegel

Dr. Gretel Schlegel joined Abbey Pet Hospital in 2017 after a move from Fond Du Lac Wisconsin. Dr. Schlegel is originally from Minnesota where she graduated from Veterinary school in 2011. In Wisconsin she worked at a mixed animal practice where she saw dogs, cats, cows, sheep, goats, and alpacas. Dr. Schlegel especially enjoys working with older cats and their special needs. She has two spoiled cats of her own, Agador and Sassafras. Gretel enjoys hiking, learning native plants, wildflowers, baking , and spending time with her husband and cats.

Meggie Denny

As a young girl she always wanted to work with animals. In 1999, as she entered middle school and with support from her mother, Meggie’s passion for animal care took off when she began volunteering at the Vallejo/Benicia Humane Society.  After high school she worked as a veterinary receptionist/technician for 5 years before taking time off to start her family. Meggie kept her passion for animal care alive by volunteering at UC Davis picnic day and the Suisun Wild Life Preserve. It was during this time Meggie decided to further her career by completing the Veterinary Technician program. After joining Abbey Pet Hospital as a technician for the first year and a half, she was given the opportunity to Manage the practice. She believes in compassion and hard work to provide a clean and friendly environment for pets and their owners. Meggie strives to better herself and improve her skills to help those in need.
